The Death of the Red Fox
The next day Mr. HenÂdeÂrÂland found for me a man who had a boat of his own and was to cross the LinÂnhe Loch that afÂterÂnoon inÂto ApÂpin, fishÂing. Him he preÂvailed on to take me, for he was one of his flock; and in this way I saved a long dayâs travel and the price of the two pubÂlic ferÂries I must othÂerÂwise have passed.
It was near noon beÂfore we set out; a dark day with clouds, and the sun shinÂing upon little patches. The sea was here very deep and still, and had scarce a wave upon it; so that I must put the waÂter to my lips beÂfore I could beÂlieve it to be truly salt. The mounÂtains on either side were high, rough and barÂren, very black and gloomy in the shadÂow of the clouds, but all silÂver-laced with little waÂterÂcourses where the sun shone upon them. It seemed a hard counÂtry, this of ApÂpin, for people to care as much about as Alan did.
There was but one thing to menÂtion. A little after we had starÂted, the sun shone upon a little movÂing clump of scarÂlet close in along the waÂterÂside to the north. It was much of the same red as solÂdiersâ coats; every now and then, too, there came little sparks and lightÂnings, as though the sun had struck upon bright steel.
I asked my boatÂman what it should be, and he answered he supÂposed it was some of the red solÂdiers comÂing from Fort WilÂliÂam inÂto ApÂpin, against the poor tenÂantry of the counÂtry. Well, it was a sad sight to me; and whethÂer it was beÂcause of my thoughts of Alan, or from someÂthing prophÂetÂic in my bosÂom, alÂthough this was but the second time I had seen King Georgeâs troops, I had no good will to them.
At last we came so near the point of land at the enÂterÂing in of Loch Leven that I begged to be set on shore. My boatÂman (who was an honÂest felÂlow and mindÂful of his promÂise to the catÂechÂist) would fain have carÂried me on to BalachulÂish; but as this was to take me farther from my secret desÂtinÂaÂtion, I inÂsisted, and was set on shore at last unÂder the wood of LetÂterÂmore (or LetÂtervore, for I have heard it both ways) in Alanâs counÂtry of ApÂpin.
This was a wood of birches, growÂing on a steep, craggy side of a mounÂtain that overÂhung the loch. It had many openÂings and ferny howes; and a road or bridle track ran north and south through the midst of it, by the edge of which, where was a spring, I sat down to eat some oat-bread of Mr. HenÂdeÂrÂlandâs and think upon my situÂation.
Here I was not only troubled by a cloud of stingÂing midges, but far more by the doubts of my mind. What I ought to do, why I was goÂing to join myÂself with an outÂlaw and a would-be
